Under the aegis of the Tennis Committee, the Club has become a hive
of tournament activity. Few clubs can boast such a high percentage
of handicaps in the twenties and below, and in 1989, the club did
break the metropolitan hold over the Field Trophy Final by playing
but regrettably losing to Hampton Court.
Top
players at the club since 1979 have included Philip Shaw-Hamilton
who won the International Over 50s Singles title at Queen's Club
in 2004, Tom Seymour Mead, the Lord Willoughby de Broke, Martin
Dunne, Tom Granville (as an amateur), Paul Holland, Andrew Hamilton,
Simon Hobson and Sally Jones, who was Ladies World Champion in 1993.

The
Club continues to host the popular Inter Club Tournament - sponsors
have included Nigel Brown, Moreton Morrell member John Terry, whose
Anglepoise Lamps are a famous brand name and Lodders the Stratford-based
solicitors. The tournament was the brainchild of Robert Harper who
organized it for six years and his good work was continued with
great efficiency by John Miller. John was invariably fortified by
Abbey Well mineral water: Robert by something a little stronger.
Since then the competition has been under the aegis of Vice-Chairman
David Bryant.
