Tennis Courts 2005

France:
During the 18th Century, real tennis had been in decline but the French Revolution in 1789 brought an abrupt end to the game throughout France, to such an extent that there are now only three active courts - Paris, built in 1919, Fontainebleau (1702) and Bordeaux (new court built in 1978).

U.S.A:
In the USA, the game blossomed at the turn of the 20th century and there are now eleven courts in existence at:-
Newport Rhode Island (1880)
Boston (1886)
Tuxedo Park (1900)
Lakewood New Jersey (1902)
Aiken South Carolina (1903)
Philadelphia (1907)
Greentree Long Island (1915)
New York (two courts 1917)
Washington (1997)
and an unused court in Chicago

Australia:
Hobart, Tasmania (1875)
Melbourne Royal Tennis Club (1882)
Ballarat, Victoria (1984)
Sydney University (1997)

Romsey, Victoria (1999)

U.K.:
There are currently 26 courts in use:-
Hampton Court Palace (built 1529 renovated 1661)

Oxford University (1800, renovated 1912)

Cambridge University (2 courts 1862 and the recently restored 1890 court)
