History

The Grand Opening

The Court building was completed in December 1905. A plaque with the date inscribed on it was moulded into an ornate decorative base on the western elevation of the buildings.

The court was opened on May 19th 1906, when Mr Garland kindly entertained a large number of friends and enthusiasts of the game. The opening match was between Peter Latham, who must have played at the opening match of more courts than any man in the modern history of the game- as, for instance, Hardwicke, Moreton Morrell, Crabbet, Suffolk House and Hayling Island, in this country- and Edward Johnson, who had been engaged as Mr.Garland's professional. The result of the match was a draw, each player winning two sets. Among those present were, beside Mr Garland, Sir C.D.Rose, the late Mr R Walker, Mr H.A.Walker, Mr Thwaites, Mr F.A.Ward, Major Barry, Mr J.H.Weatherby, C.Lambert (Hatfield), G.F.Covey, (the present champion}, F. Andre (Queen's Club), J.H.Dickinson (Master of the Oxford court), R.C.Dickinson (Prince's) and many others.
