THE LODDERS HANDICAP DOUBLES AND SINGLES
The festival which was covered on radio and regional television, also attracted over 100 amateur players from all over the world for the Lodder's Amateur Championships in which several local players progressed through the group matches to the latter stages, world Over 50s champion Philip Shaw-Hamilton, the club champion reaching the semi-finals of the singles before losing to Leamington's Mattew Fattorini. In the doubles, several Moreton pairings, including club chairman Sir Andrew Hamilton and American number 1 Frederika Adam, former world champion Sally Jones and Mike Garnett, John Lambdon and Howard Shipstone plus Nick Mills and Flo Holland all got to the knock-out stage. Gabrielle Smart and Jane Sloan who had helped to run the centenary celebrations and organise the ball, reached the quarter-finals beating the stylish Leamington partnership of Charles Wade and George Hayward but were then out-hit by David Jenkins and amateur singles champion John Burnett. Local heroes Lambdon and Shipstone made it through to the final before bowing out to Aldona Greenwood and Tim Parker of Manchester by the narrowest of margins after fighting back from an early deficit to 5-all, 40-all.
